Mural Project
Ever heard the question, “graffiti: art or crime?” Well whether you’re a grafitti artist yourself or just a lover of hip hop, you’ve probably heard this controversy and know that graffiti can be amazing art. Here at Check Your Head, we feel the same way!
On the weekend of October 6 th and 7 th Check Your Head teamed up with the Santa Fe Arts District on their Alley Beautification Project to create graffiti as art, and art for a good cause. Mural artists Armando Somoza of East High School and Michael “Fate” Sierra of Colorado Hip Hop Elements led students from East High School and Skyland Community High School for this project. The mentoring opportunity for the mural artists and student artists, combined with a lot of spray paint and a design based on the themes of community involvement, cultural diversity and character development resulted in a bold and impressive final work.
Want to see it for yourself? The mural is located in the alley between Santa Fe and Inca Streets on the block between 8 th and 9 th Streets. Check Your Head is eager to be apart of the Urban Art movement and create more positive outlets for artistic expression and positive recognition for young artists in Denver. East HS Assembly
Sad you missed the party?! Don’t be, just check out the videos of our Check Your Head students from East High School! The Fall 2007 Check Your Head program came to an end with a final assembly that rocked the house with a performance in December. There were 130 friends, family, teachers, and staff in the audience to support the group of 30 students. The show started out with an awesome MC piece called “Lost” by Niishia Hysaw and Stasia Jones. Following was an explosive show including Raymone Lee’s “I Try”, the Check Your Head Dancers, the Check Your Head MCs, DJ Kason, Isiah, Sara, and J. To wrap up it up, Jonny 5 from the Flobots took the stage. The show was a success with exciting performances.
